Building a three-bottle wardrobe

The idea of a "fragrance wardrobe" gets sold as something you need — a bottle for every mood, every hour of the day, every occasion. What follows is for the smaller number of people who genuinely want three distinct bottles and want to spend their money well doing it, not for everyone.

Why three, and why in this order

Three roles cover almost every situation an ordinary week throws at you: something light enough for daytime and heat, something controlled enough for a work or office setting, and something with more presence for evenings and events. Build in that order. The day bottle gets worn most often, so it should be the one you are surest about. The evening bottle gets worn least often, so it can afford to be the more adventurous or expensive purchase, because a miscalculation there costs you fewer wears.

The day bottle

This is the one you will reach for most mornings, in office heat or on errands, worn under a fan rather than an AC vent all day.
